Mondion
is a superb book about a military engineer who left his mark in Malta. Charles Francois de Mondion (1681-1733) arrived in Malta in 1715. The author Denis de Lucca produces fresh evidence that does justice to the achievement of this military engineer during this period. His great opportunity came when Grand Master de Vilhena decided to unleash an ambitious building programme that soon transformed the Island into a typical 18th century state. Mondion was directly responsible for projects such as the rehabilitation of Mdina, the building of Fort Manoel, the foundation of the Baroque suburb of Floriana and the establishment of several medical and charitable institutions. He is buried in the crypt of the Fort Manoel chapel.
