City By An Order (2nd Edition)
The creation of a new city along the peninsula of Sceb-er-ras was an idea which excited the mind of a considerable number of military engineers between the 1530’s and the XVIII c. when such names as Ferramolino, Barolomeo Genga, Baldassare Lanci, Francesco Laparelli and Geronimo Cassar appeared regularly during the first phase of the execution of this project.
To these were later added those of Pietro Paolo Floriani, Firenzuola Valperga, de’Medici and others engaged to strengthen the landward side of the new Valletta fortifications, a subject which caused considerable disagreement between the various “experts” in turn responsible to a succession of Grand Masters, some keener than others to contribute to the successful conclusion of a project which was set up primarliy to resist a possible Turkish invasion which however was never to materialise.
This book deals with all the many different events and situations which developed as a result of the part played by all the different persons involved in this exercise.
