Marine Fauna Of Malta And Gozo: 50 Common Species
The Maltese Islands are surrounded by great stretches of sea on all sides, resulting in a substantial proportion of the national territory comprising marine habitats. Approximately 35% of these habitats are classified as protected areas through the Natura 2000 network. Consequently, the marine environment of the Maltese Islands holds significant ecological value, not only for biodiversity conservation but also for its considerable economic, cultural, and tourism-related contributions. This book aims to highlight 50 common animal species found in the marine habitats of Malta and Gozo, with the purpose of showcasing the faunal biodiversity of Maltese waters, explaining the biology of such fauna and highlighting the importance of the Maltese marine ecosystem.
