My reminiscences of this tragedy go back to my early childhood. Interest in what is by far the worst calamity in the history of Gozo in time of peace grew up with me and I soon started to record both written and oral documentation about it. It was not long before I realized that it was partly an untold account, for as the reader will find out, a number of facts and details were purposely concealed or distorted. Seventy-five years later, through the backing and support of the Gozo Regional Development Authority, this book, brimming with extensive documentation and rare photographs, is presenting a full narrative of the event and a long-belated remembrance of the twenty-three that perished on that fateful night… lest the collective memory of the event evaporates.
