This book traces two particular strands in Gozo’s history. First, it discusses changes in the land and the people, in its society and administration, its culture and identity. Secondly, it takes up the issue of ‘business,’ examining how this has been elaborated on the small, peripheral island over time. The discussion reveals the consequences and costs which the embracing of change has brought about during the last fifty years. Then, the book picks particular aspects of concern and of interest to the island, viewed through the perspective of the Gozo Business Chamber. In so doing, it reveals how, in the 25 years since its foundation, the Chamber became a leading interlocutor between local society and the upper echelons of power both on the local and international level. Finally, it identifies the challenges for the future: ones that are at the heart of the island’s problems, and a major concern for the Chamber itself and for Gozo.
