The second volume of ‘Legacy of an Order in Malta’ covers the years 1681 to 1798, and the islands, still ruled by the Order of St John, have seen great changes. People are pouring into the new homeland and the population

grows, doubling and trebling and more. This was encouraging and invigorating, and, in a sense, the Order now really belonged to Malta.

The magnificent buildings are evidence of the success of the relationship between the Hospitallers and the people. Under Perellos, de Vilhena and Pinto the embellishments created remain, to this day, some of the finest artistic attractions preserved for posterity.

Although this volume presents a general cross-section of secular buildings erected throughout Malta from c.1680 to the end of the Order of St John’s rule in 1798, it must be pointed out that changes and modifications to these buildings went on well beyond the end of the 18th century, right up to the 20th in some cases. These have been recorded in the relevant descriptions of the book, including references to damages resulting from aerial attacks during the Second World War, to try and present a comprehensive picture of their development over the years.
