Brush Of The Evangelist
The book discusses in a broad context the Malta paintings which pious tradition attributes to the brush of the Evangelist Luke and elaborates on their significance to the moulding of a Maltese religious and political national identity. Although their artistic interest is given prime consideration, equal care is taken to integrate them in the historical and social realities of the age that produced them . The Malta icons are considered in individualised Essays which draw a clear divide between the ones that are essentially Maltese and those which arrived with Knight Hospitallers in 1530.
