A Journey Through The Centuries
Historical discoveries in Russo-Maltese relations
This account of Russo-Maltese connections, far from being dull and academic reads at times like a saga of diplomatic intrigue, adventurous travelers, refined émigrés, shifty corsairs secretly recruited into imperial service and displaced Madonnas.
This volume, which was ably compiled, edited and introduced by Elizaveta Zolina us the result of seven years if painstaking effort spent on delving deeply into several archives, revealing and highlighting with loving care this aspect of the history of the two countries, which has hitherto remained rather obscure. Dr Zolina’s achievement lies in the way she managed to inspire and gently persuade the many illustrious contributors – Maltese, Russian, German, French and Canadian – all of them experts in their field to give their best. This book, which in itself is a real feat of research, will surely be challenging many preconceptions about Russo-Maltese relations.
One remarkable aspect is the shifting in and out of different viewpoints thus rendering kaleidoscopic vistas of breadth and depth comprising profound historical research, artistic essays and personal recollections. Apart from the rich thematic presentation, the book is further enhanced by a profuse bibliography, detailed notes, extensive commentaries and cross-references.
Besides being remarkable examples of enrichment through a cross culture approach this book will surely be setting a new benchmark in Russo-Maltese studies
