For centuries Malta held a strategic position in the Mediterranean, occupied in turn by the Romans, the Byzantines, an expanding Islamic empire and eventually coming under the Christian control of the Knights of St. John. Malta was later held by Napoleon who was subsequently evicted by the Maltese aided by Britain and her allies. As part of the British Empire and Commonwealth, it played an invaluable role in the Second World War, finally becoming a Republic in 1974.
