Caravaggio absconded to Naples and subsequently sailed to Malta, which was then ruled by the Knights of Malta. Anxious to see Caravaggio become a knight, the Grand Master successfully begged the Pope to exceptionally approve Caravaggio's knighthood, in spite of his past. But Caravaggio had not changed! Shortly after his knighthood, the artist was again in trouble. He was arrested and imprisoned but managed to mysteriously escape from Malta. As a result, he was formally expelled from the Order "like a rotten and fetid limb".
