Armoury Of The Knights
When published in 1999, The Palace Armoury: A study of Military Storehouse of the Kights of the Order of St John by Stephen C Spiteri was the only detailed study of the Armoury in the Palace of the Grand Masters, Valletta to appear ever since Guy Francis Laking first drew international attention to this important collection with his Catalogue of Arms and Armoury way back in 1903.
Armoury of the Knights is now a new and expanded edition of that book. However , it is more than just a second edition. Beautifully produced and copiously illustrated, it has now been considerably enlarged to cover 400 pages in order to include new and hitherto unpublished historical material. Included in this new publication are an annotated catalogue of the collection of arms and armour, lists and inventories of arms and armour extracted from the spogli of individual knights, a chapter focusing on the development and layout of the Sala d’Armi and its facilities inside the Palace, and information on the various military storehouses falling under the responsibility of the Commander of Artillery, particularly the polveriste (gunpowder magazines and factories) and artillery stores in Malta and Gozo.
